In a small town outside Dallas, Texas, the Wilson family had a front yard that looked… fine. Just a lawn, a couple of bushes, and a porch they barely used.
But as the children grew older, and faced with their desire to play outside, they began to wonder: what if we transformed this space into a place we truly wanted to be?
That thought turned into a project that completely changed how they used their home.

Meet the Wilsons
Dan and Emily Wilson live with their teenage son and their dog, Max. They both work full-time, but in the evenings and on weekends, they just want to chill — without feeling stuck inside.
Their back yard had potential. It was a nice, open space with a clean layout. But there was zero shade, and Texas sun isn’t something you sit under for long.
“We’d sit on the porch for five minutes, and that was it,” —— Dan said.
“Too hot, too bright. We needed something better.” —— Emily said
Dan and Emily's Requirements
On a friend’s recommendation, Dan and Emily contacted us and explained their needs: they had only three requirements.
- First, they didn’t want the old-fashioned, fixed pergolas that were too hot in the summer and offered no shelter from the rain. They didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a useless decoration.
- Second, they didn’t want a gazebo that required frequent maintenance. They were already tired from work; they were buying sunshades to enjoy life, not to keep as decorations, so they didn’t want to spend too much time on maintenance.
- Third, they wanted a durable installation solution that wouldn’t break down easily like the sunshades they had previously purchased, forcing them to spend money on new ones.
How we solved each requirement
1) Shade that breathes in summer and seals in rain
Motorized louvered roof (0–135°): lets hot air vent when partially open, and closes watertight during rain.
Orientation by sun path: we set louver span to block the afternoon west sun they suffer most, with two preset angles (midday / late-afternoon) on the remote.
Integrated drainage: gutters inside the perimeter beams, down through the posts—no waterline across the doorway, no splashback on glass.
Optional side screening (tracks pre-routed): cuts cross-breeze and adds privacy without changing the clean look.
2) Truly low-maintenance
All-aluminum framework (6063-T5) + AAMA 2604 powder coat: no staining, no peeling paint; just rinse and wipe.
304 stainless fasteners and sealed drive components; IP-rated motor with soft-start controller.
Service design: concealed wiring in posts, snap-in LED channels; if they ever upgrade, parts swap without opening walls.
Simple care plan: quarterly 10-minute rinse; annual gutter flush. That’s it.
3) Durable installation, not a disposable shade
Engineered anchoring to concrete slab or isolated footings (for pavers, we core through to footings so posts aren’t relying on the paver layer).
Code-based loads: we size spans and fixings to local wind/snow criteria and supply anchorage details with the submittal pack.
Tight tolerances: self-lubricating bushings at pivot pins keep operation smooth and quiet for the long term.

Beyond that, Here's what we did better than they asked:
1,Future-proof power: We ran a clean circuit to the pergola with junction space for fans, heaters, and outlets; even if they don’t add them now, the pathway is ready.
2,Lighting plan: Three layers—ambient rim light, task light over the table, and dimmable beam wash—so nights feel as comfortable as days.
3,Compliance made easy: We prepared the HOA packet (elevations, finishes) and the city submittals (site plan with setbacks, anchorage details, electrical one-line). Fewer back-and-forths, faster approval.
4,Temperature heater: Allows users to enjoy outdoor activities and rest even in winter, completely unaffected by the cold wind.
